Twitter Spaces: Five Successful Tips

Just over a year ago, Twitter launched “Twitter Spaces” – a new (and not so revolutionary) service that at its core is based on “Clubhouse.” If you are not familiar with Clubhouse, it’s a chat room app for live audio discussions. Spaces is basically an imitation of Clubhouse, but since it is backed by Twitter, a very successful social network on an astronomical scale, it is likely to be much more successful and popular.

Technically it isn’t hard to start hosting a Space; You just long-press the Tweet button on Twitter and create an event (assuming you have over 600 followers). However, the real difficulty is successfully hosting a Space discussion that attracts listeners and gets them to show interest. How to successfully host aΒ TwitterΒ Space? Our tips and pointers.

Tip 1: From Intuition to Method

In order to host a successful Space, we need to go from relying on our Intuition to depending on meticulous planning. We feel this one requires some clarification: Have you ever sat down with your friends, and had a conversation so cool and clever, that you started thinking that even if neutral strangers had listened to that conversation, they would have found it interesting? That feeling often comes from a Confirmation bias we sometimes lack, thinking we are more interesting than we are. That thinking can sometimes make us say: “It’s not a TV show or a podcast. Just a Twitter Space. I’ll just wing it”.

However, If you try to host a Space and rely solely on your Intuition and charisma, you might succeed at it, but you also might fail. Suppose you want to host a Space that is interesting and attractive successfully. In that case, you have to plan it:

  • Prepare Discussion topics and talking points.
  • Anticipate claims and prepare for them.
  • Navigate the conversation so it will keep interested over time.
  • Strategize: Plan your events for a duration of at least two months in advance, so you will know the guest and theme for each episode. If you plan it right, you can relate to all of the relevant values of your brand at the end of the planned period.Β
  • Consistency: Make sure that your Spaces are always on the same say and at the same time. It makes people take your more seriously.

If you are experienced in talking in front of a crowd, you are more likely to succeed at this. If you are not, it’s best to outsource this kind of activity (or just accept the fact that it will take some time before you will get that hang of it).

Tip 2: Various guests

If you want your Space to be attractive every time, you have to diversify the points of view on the Space. Different views create exciting discussions. The best way to do it is to bring an additional and different guest in every episode, someone who carries another point of view to the central theme of the Space. It is also preferable to get influencers who have their own gravity force and can elevate your game. The kind of guests who knows how to hold spaces, andΒ  have their own audience and could bring you new ears.
