YouTube Shopping Affiliate: What You Can Tag, and When You Get Paid

AliExpress joined the YouTube Shopping affiliate program on 20 October 2026, extending a partnership that started in South Korea in March into the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom and Germany. The catalogue got bigger. Nothing about who can join, what the commission is or what you can measure changed, and that is where the decisions actually sit.

Key Takeaways

  • AliExpress joined the YouTube Shopping affiliate program on 20 October 2026, expanding into the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom and Germany after a South Korea launch in March 2026.
  • You can tag products at 500 subscribers, not 1,000. Shopping sits in the lower tier of the expanded YouTube Partner Program, next to fan funding.
  • Commissions are paid through AdSense 60 to 120 days after the purchase, so sales made in the November peak land in the first quarter of 2027.
  • YouTube will not tell you which video or product drove an Amazon sale. Reporting is aggregate daily revenue, clicks and sales.
  • Every retailer sets its own commission rate and its own attribution window, per product. YouTube publishes neither.

What the AliExpress deal actually adds

The AliExpress announcement, dated 20 October from Hangzhou, says creators will discover and select AliExpress products directly inside YouTube Studio and tag them in long-form videos, Shorts and livestreams. The categories named are consumer electronics, sports and outdoor, home and living, and lifestyle, with a stated focus on Brand+, AliExpress’s selection of branded products. Viewers click through from YouTube to AliExpress to buy.

Eric Zhang, vice president of AliExpress, is the only executive quoted: “Content and commerce are converging globally.” There is no YouTube statement in the release, no commission rate, and no start date for any of the four markets beyond “will expand”. Further expansion is tied to YouTube’s own market rollout, which means this is a catalogue addition inside somebody else’s schedule.

For a small social commerce operation that matters less than it reads. A bigger catalogue only helps if your country is switched on, and that is a separate question with a separate answer.

YouTube said 35 countries. Its own page lists 14.

At Made On YouTube on 23 September 2026, Amjad Hanif and Travis Katz wrote: “We’re expanding our affiliate program to 35 countries by the end of the year.” The same post puts more than 1.3 million creators in the program and says gross merchandise volume grew 13 times over two years, both company figures with no published method.

Checked on 22 October, YouTube’s eligibility page lists 14 countries: Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. The United Kingdom and Germany are not on it, even though the AliExpress release names both as markets it is moving into and PPC Land reported the United Kingdom as the fifteenth market on 6 August 2026. The page also notes that eligibility “might be different for pilot programs”.

So the list and the promise disagree by twenty-one countries with ten weeks of the year left. Check the eligibility page rather than the press release, because the page is the one that can tell you no.

The YouTube Shopping affiliate bar is 500 subscribers, not 1,000

The expanded Partner Program has two tiers, and Shopping sits in the lower one: 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That tier also unlocks channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and Jewels and gifts.

Ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue are the higher tier, and they are the ones that need 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. A channel that cannot run ads yet can still tag products, which makes affiliate tagging the cheapest monetisation door on the platform for small creators.

Four exclusions override all of that. Music channels, Official Artist Channels and channels associated with music partners are out. So is any channel whose audience is set as Made for Kids, or that carries a significant number of made-for-kids videos. Filling in the interest form, YouTube adds, “does not guarantee an invitation”.

You cannot see the rate, the window, or which video sold it

YouTube’s wording on commission is blunt: “Every participating brand and retailer will set their commission rates and attribution window for each product.” Two tags in the same video can therefore pay different rates against different lookback windows, and no single page collects them. A temporary incentive currently passes 100 percent of affiliate merchant commissions to creators, and YouTube says that rate may decrease later. No end date has been published; PPC Land dates the arrangement to the United Kingdom launch on 6 August 2026.

The reporting gap is sharper. On the United States Amazon integration, YouTube states plainly that “you can’t check which specific videos or products drove Amazon purchases”. You see aggregate daily revenue, clicks and sales, and that is all. Only one YouTube channel per Amazon account can tag, and a return is deducted from your current balance, which can push a report negative for a while. The Amazon tagging page also sets the payment rhythm: commissions lock on a monthly cycle and pay two AdSense cycles later, with YouTube’s own example being January earnings paid in the March cycle.

Across the program the stated range is 60 to 120 days from purchase to payment. Tag through Black Friday and Cyber Monday and you are building first-quarter revenue, not November revenue. Plan the cash accordingly.

What the YouTube Shopping affiliate program does not change

It does not change your reach. Nothing in the announcement or any of the help pages says a tagged video is recommended differently, ranked differently or shown to more people. Tagging adds a revenue line to content you were posting anyway; it is not a distribution tactic.

It does not change what you have to make, either. The tag sits on the long-form videos, livestreams and Shorts you already publish, so there is nothing new to shoot and no new format to learn. And it does not give you a customer. The purchase happens on the retailer’s site, so you get a commission and no email address, no order data and no way to follow up.

The one genuinely new commercial lever is Affiliate Campaigns, where retailers offer higher commission rates or bonuses on specific products. That is a better rate, not a fee. Brand deals are a separate product, Creator Partnerships, which YouTube says is available in 20 countries.

Your checklist before the November peak

  1. Find your country. Open the eligibility page and look for it on the list of 14. If it is not there, nothing else here applies to you yet.
  2. Check the lower tier. 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.
  3. Check the exclusions first. Music channels, Official Artist Channels and Made for Kids audiences cannot join at any size.
  4. Write down the rate and the window. Record both for every product you intend to tag, because nobody collects them for you.
  5. Budget for the lag. A late November sale is first-quarter money, 60 to 120 days out.
  6. Design your own measurement. Tag one product per video for a few weeks, since the reporting will not attribute a sale to a video.
  7. Disclose in the video. Paid placements and sponsorships still have to follow YouTube’s paid product placement policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need 1,000 subscribers to tag products on YouTube?

No. The threshold is 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. The 1,000-subscriber bar people quote is the one for ad revenue, which is a different tier of the same program.

How much commission does YouTube pay?

None of it is set by YouTube. Each participating brand or retailer sets its own commission rate and attribution window for each product. A temporary incentive currently passes 100 percent of affiliate merchant commissions through to creators, and YouTube has said that rate may decrease later without giving a date.

When does the money actually arrive?

Between 60 and 120 days after the purchase, through AdSense. Amazon commissions work on a monthly lock and then pay two AdSense cycles later, so YouTube’s own worked example has January earnings arriving in the March payment cycle. Returns are deducted from the current balance rather than the original month.

Does tagging products help a video get recommended?

There is no published evidence that it does. YouTube has made several changes to how videos get found this year, from originality rules to conversational search, and none of them mention product tags. Treat tagging as a way to earn from reach you already have.

The AliExpress headline is the smallest part of this. The decisions are whether your country is on a list of 14, whether your channel clears a 500-subscriber bar you may already be over, and whether you can live with revenue that arrives a quarter late and cannot be traced to a video. Those three answers are checkable this afternoon.
