Agentic Advertising: What Meta, TikTok and X Just Shipped
Agentic advertising reached three social platforms in two days. TikTok published its set on 5 October 2026, Meta and X theirs on 6 October, all at Advertising Week New York, and all of it moves the same job: the campaign gets built by a model and signed off by you, rather than the other way round.
One piece of it is live and self-serve today. Most of the rest is an eligibility-gated test you reach through a sales rep. Working out which is which is the whole decision this week.
Key Takeaways
- TikTok’s Model Context Protocol connector is live now for Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake and Tencent WorkBuddy, so a TikTok campaign can be planned and launched from outside Ads Manager.
- TikTok reports advertiser use of that connector up more than 200 percent from July to September 2026, on its own internal data.
- Meta’s business assistant can generate creative, update targeting and change an ad’s budget from a conversational prompt. Meta published no spending cap, no approval step and no rollback.
- TikTok’s Shopping Assistant, Buy Direct and Lead Agent are available only through “eligibility-based testing opportunities” arranged with a TikTok sales partner.
- None of the three platforms published a performance figure for any of it.
What Shipped at Advertising Week, and When
TikTok published its list on 5 October. It covers what TikTok calls Agentic Commerce: Buy Direct, a native one-click checkout from the For You feed, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that answers product questions on sizing, shipping and availability. Alongside those sit Agentic Leads, a lead agent that runs in direct messages and on an advertiser’s own site; a Search Ads Campaign powered by Smart+, which automates keywords, bidding and search budget; Smart+ Creative Selection, which pools your assets, Symphony AI-generated creative and creator content into one approval workflow; and the TikTok Ad Network, now open to US advertisers and reaching nearly 400,000 apps.
Meta’s set, announced on 6 October, is smaller and further along. Its business assistant gained memory across past campaigns, agentic control of creative, targeting and budget, and two features still in testing: importing brand voice guidelines, and scheduled recurring reports. Advantage+ creative video generation from static assets is now generally available.
X announced X Lift the same day. You give it a business URL, it generates ad images and copy, and it will optionally build the whole campaign including targeting while you set the budget. X says active self-serve advertisers grew 50 percent in Q3 2026 against Q3 2025. That is a count of advertisers, not a result from X Lift, which has no published performance figure at all.

The MCP Connector Is the Part You Can Use Today
The Model Context Protocol work is the only part of agentic advertising here you can switch on without a rep. TikTok for Business MCP is live as a connector for Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. Meta expanded its own Ads MCP server the next day so third-party AI tools can build and manage Meta campaigns. TikTok says use of its connector rose more than 200 percent between July and September 2026, which is its own internal figure, unaudited.
What that buys is the campaign build without the clicking: planning, launching and managing from a chat window you already have open. What it does not buy is judgment. An MCP connection runs with the permissions of whatever ad account you attach it to, so the question is which account you point it at. Run client work out of one business manager and the connector gets all of it. This is the same permissions problem that arrived with consumer AI agents earlier this year, and no platform answered it here either.
Meta’s Assistant Can Change Your Budget With No Published Guardrail
Meta’s business assistant can now change an ad’s budget and its targeting from a conversational prompt, and generate creative elements in the same exchange. It also carries more memory than before. Meta’s own wording on what that memory holds: “This includes the context of what you tried last quarter, your seasonality, and the goals you’ve described.”
Meta published no spending cap on any of that, no human approval step, and no way to roll back a change the assistant makes. It published no performance figures either. So the only guardrail in the system is the one you set yourself: a campaign budget, and an account spending limit set in Ads Manager before you start prompting.
TikTok’s Agentic Advertising Tools Are Not Self-Serve Yet
TikTok’s own advertising blog, published the same day as the newsroom post, says the agentic solutions “are available through eligibility-based testing opportunities” and tells advertisers to contact their TikTok sales partner about eligibility. Buy Direct also “requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)”. Neither of those is something a two-person team sets up this month.
The controls TikTok did document are worth treating as the standard to ask for. Lead Agent runs off a customizable Knowledge Base of brand-approved information, and the advertiser chooses what the agent may reference and which questions qualify a prospect. Shopping Assistant answers from merchant-supplied information only. Smart+ Creative Selection, TikTok says, “gives advertisers full control of what goes live”. The Ad Network ships with brand safety and placement controls. Brands also stay the Merchant of Record on Buy Direct, so if you already sell through social commerce, this changes the checkout and leaves the refunds where they were.
What Agentic Advertising Does Not Do
None of it touches organic reach. Not one of the three announcements mentioned ranking, recommendation or distribution for unpaid posts, so nothing changes for a Reel or a post on its own. Instagram did a smaller version of this on 30 September, putting a boost for a livestream inside the live composer and saying nothing about live distribution either.
It does not generate a campaign out of nothing, either. Meta’s video generation starts from static assets you already own. Smart+ Creative Selection assembles assets you already have plus creator content you already licensed. X Lift reads a URL you already wrote. Thin inputs still produce thin ads, only faster.
And it does not arrive with a result. Across the three platforms there is not one before-and-after figure for cost per result, cost per lead or conversion rate, so the only honest benchmark is your own last 30 days.

The Checklist for This Week
- Set an account spending limit. In Ads Manager, before you connect any agent or prompt the assistant. It is the only cap that holds whatever a model decides.
- Pick the narrowest ad account. An MCP connector inherits the permissions of the account you attach it to. Give it one account, not the whole business manager.
- Pull 30 days by placement. Your own cost per result is the benchmark, since no platform supplied one. The placement breakdown is also where you find out what you are already buying by default.
- Write the approved facts down once. Sizing, shipping, returns, and what you will and will not claim. TikTok’s Lead Agent and Shopping Assistant both run off that list.
- Keep one campaign built by hand. Same objective, same creative, same window. It is the only way to tell whether the automation helped.
- Ask for the approval step in writing. If a rep offers an eligibility-based test, ask what the agent can change without you and what reverses it.
Questions About Agentic Advertising
Can I use agentic advertising tools right now?
Partly. The MCP connectors from TikTok and Meta are live and need no approval, so you can plan and launch campaigns from a third-party AI tool today. TikTok’s Shopping Assistant, Buy Direct and Lead Agent are eligibility-based tests arranged through a TikTok sales partner, and Meta’s importing tools and scheduled reports are still in testing.
Can an AI agent spend my budget without asking me?
On Meta the published answer is unclear, which is itself the answer. Meta says the business assistant can change an ad’s budget through a conversational prompt, and has published no spending cap, no approval step and no rollback. Set a campaign budget and an account spending limit yourself before you use it.
Does any of this improve organic reach?
No. None of the 5 and 6 October announcements mentioned ranking, recommendation or distribution for unpaid posts. These are paid tools. They change how an ad gets built and bought, not how a post travels.
Do I need new creative to use these tools?
No, and that is partly the point. Meta’s Advantage+ video generation works from static assets you already own, and TikTok’s Smart+ Creative Selection pools your existing assets with AI-generated and creator content. You still need those assets to be worth assembling.
The usable part of agentic advertising this week is small and specific: two MCP connectors, live now, that let you run a campaign from a chat window instead of a dashboard. Everything else is gated, in testing, or unmeasured. Set the spending limit, connect the narrowest account you can, and keep one campaign built by hand so there is something to compare against.
